A charming, alarming Hebraist (not so much)

Here's a page from Aleister Crowley's Sepher Sephiroth, probably the only Hebrew/Aramaic dictionary ordered by gematriya.

  1. Steg (dos iz nit der šteg)12:29 AM, September 14, 2012

Tried really hard to get his name to add up to 666, eh?

  2. I can see someone writing a book like "Spice of Torah - Gematria" so that readers can create their gematria-related divrei Torah. But did Crowley have such an audience? What was /his/ motivation?

  3. This has nothing to do with anything, but do you know where I can find a copy of Shadal's commentary on Isaiah online? Thanks.

  4. Right here Jake, link.

Phil, this was actually originally printed in Crowley's magazine Equinox. His motivation? He was a little off and believed in some very weird things. He was a leading occultist, and he had an audience.

  5. today we use bar ilan's responsa project...

  6. Aleister was the BILAAM of modern times. The guy was for real.

  7. Aleister was the BILAAM of modern times. The guy was for real.

  8. It is tragic that so few people will get the title of this one :)

the mathematical manipulation above to me seems so tragic.
