A Maimonidean political endorsement

Good thing the Rambam has peyos now. החזיר עטרה ליושנה.

  1. He probably had peyos tucked behind his ears before :)

  2. Do you think the historical Moses Maimonides had 'em?

  3. Sideburn-y beard thing? I have no idea, but I can't imagine he had no shitta at all about it. There is a teshuva where he says that there is no reason to grow peyos, but that's hardly the same thing as being mevatel a de-oraysa, so I'm sure even in his most Islamic miliuiness he had what qualified, according to him, as 'not rounding the corners of his head.'

  4. Who is Amsalem quoting? What does that Frenk know about the Rambam?!

  5. I have always understood the Rambam's position as permitting removing pe'at ha-rosh with a scissors even le-hat'hilah - see Avodah Zarah 12:6 http://www.mechon-mamre.org/i/1412.htm#6 (he does not begin discussing pe'at ha-zakan until the next halakhah). I recognize that others do not understand the Rambam that way, but I do not know why.

  6. There is quite a long discussion on the famous portrait of Maimondes, here - http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%AA%D7%95_%D7%A9%D7%9C_%D7%94%D7%A8%D7%9E%D7%91%22%D7%9D

If I follow correctly than the earliest known version of this portrait does actually have Peyos.

    2. I agree. They may both be authentic portraits, although I have my suspicion that the one from that Baltimore congregation was posthumous since, and I could be wrong, the charcoal style does not look mid-19th century to me.
