Vintage Jews.
This is the cover of a Hungarian periodical from 1861, Leopold Kompert's short-lived Illustrirtes Israelitisches Jahrbuch. As you can see, it depicts a Chassidic, Orthodox and Reform (Neolog) Jew. No, I do not know why the Chassid is holding the very Jahrbuch with all three of them on the cover. Presumably the cover keeps on going, but that's too sci-fi for me.

Interesting, but not the same Jahrbuch. In the main Jahrbuch, the title is horizontal, but in the meta-Jahrbuch (or perhaps it's a sub-Jahrbuch), the title sort of curves over the cameo.
ReplyDeleteYou're right that it's not exact, but it is definitely the same cover. I have a much higher resolution version, I would be happy to send it to you.
ReplyDeleteMeta-Jahrbuch. Wish I had thought of that.
I imagine the artist didn't know exactly how the type was going to be set. I can't believe I'm commenting on this :) nice image.
ReplyDeleteYitz, why not comment??

Well, as Rabbi Ratzon Rogers said (or at least it's attributed to him) (as of now, by me), "I never meta-Jahrbuch I didn't like."
