  1. I thought the inquisition was still formally in force as long as the monarchy still existed...?

    I wouldn't have expected the king to say that Jews in Portugal enjoyed religious freedom.

  2. Hmm, no, if Wikipedia is to be believed, the Portuguese Inquisition was abolished in 1821.
