A lecture on Rabbi Akiba Eger from 1888.

Here is nice account of a lecture on Rabbi Akiva Eger delivered by Dr. Michael Friedlander - a native of Posen - of Jews' College, reported in the Jewish Standard November 30, 1888.

If reading it as images below is inconvenient, you can read it here.

  1. Miss Fred,

Thank you for a thoroughly delightful post. Is the letter that RAE wrote available anywhere? The line the "position of Rabbi is a great danger to the soul" is interesting. Also interesting is the remark by Solomon Schechter. Thanks.

  2. Thank you. This is a most interesting report of the lecture and the subsequent discussion.

"(Mr. Schechter) didn't especially admire Eger for Torah. There were others as great in that branch now."

I wonder the reason for this disparagement, and which of his contemporaries Schechter considered as great in Torah knowledge.
