A rather unsympathetic portrait of the Rebbe of Sadigur from 1887

Here is a rather interesting article, to say the least, about Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Friedmann of Sadigura, from the Salt Lake Weekly Tribune (Jan. 20, 1887). They are not very impressed, is basically the summary. The contents of the article come from the Viennese correspondent in London.

  1. Well, I'm pretty impressed by the description. You know I want to become a chasidic rebbe, right?

    2. Wondering whether the YouTube video or the article above provide a more accurate description of rebbishe living conditions.

    1. Wow! A picture is indeed worth a thousand words; inasmuch as the above thousand words are quite eloquent, the pictures of that palace speak volumes.
I do find the entire Wikipedia article unreliable though because it misspells the word "accoutrements". :)

  5. Reminds me of a similar assessment of his illustrious ancestor: R' Israel, founder of the Ruzhin dynasty, by a Karaite traveller.
