A 1924 interview with Rabbi Meir Shapiro, and some information about the Chachmei Lublin yeshiva.

Here is the interview Rabbi Meir Shapiro (1887-1933) gave to the Jewish Chronicle when he was in London (August 29, 1924 issue):

Not as exciting as it sounds, but it's good to be recorded for posterity.

A few months earlier (May 30, 1924) the opening of the yeshiva, attended by a crowd of 50,000 was noted:

Here's a notice about the showing of a film about the Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin in London (December 19, 1930). Does anyone know if this film still exists?

Finally, here is a description of the contentious election of Rabbi Meir Shapiro as Chief Rabbi of Lublin (July 4, 1930) :

  1. I'd love information about the film that was shown. If anyone knows about the anthem for the yeshiva written by Rav Shapiro and sung at the opening ceremony, I would like information on that, as well.

  2. My mother-in-law has a huge interest in all things Drohobycz. Would you be able to expand on that Jewish Chronicle screenshot which goes into more detail about the goings-on in Drohobycz?

  3. Shalom Berger, the place to look for information about the song is probably האור המאיר, a biography with many many pictures of all things relating to R. Meir Shapiro and Chachmei Lublin. IIRC there is a picture of a song with its musical notes, and perhaps this is the song. I will look and check.

Phil, that is the entire mention of Drohobycz here; it's just a little blurb. However, I'll see if I can find anything else about it for you.

  4. SB, a preliminary search tells me that you might be referring to a song written R. Alexander Zusha Friedman, which goes in part:

    הישיבה חיינו בה נעשה חיל
    שאריה הם לנו שערי בין
    וכאור האבוקה בחשכת הליל
    לנו בגולה ישיבת לובלין

    See here page 7.

Is that what you are referring to? Please email me and I can send you some additional information.
