    The "Jews" in question are the Indian Jews of Venta Prieta and other isolated Mexican communities, whose origins may or may not go back to the Crypto-Jews of colonial Mexico.

    "Aufbau" itself is an interesting cultural artifact. Once it primarily served the German Jewish community centered in Washington Heights, but it's now a monthly magazine with editorial offices in Zurich, New York, Berlin, and Jerusalem, with a web version at aufbauonline.com.
