Forgive me for seeming to have Volozhin on the brain. I do not. However, I do want to plow through some of my archives. Here is a strange piece of an article from the Jewish Chronicle of January 18, 1861. Yes, I know; "Nishmath Hachaim."

  1. I wonder if this "Rabbi Soloman known as the old Rabbi" is actually a reference to Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, known as the Alter Rebbe - or perhaps the reference is to Rabbi Shlomo of Karlin another of the Maggid's students.
    In הקדמת בני המחבר לשולחן ערוך הרב it says that the RSZ completed shas with all poskim rishonim and achronim at 18 years old and 16 times by the time he was 30.
    Whatever the case its clear that the auther of this article wasn't to clear of the facts...
