In 1775 a rabbi from Hebron named Semuel Acohen ר' שמואל הכהן was sent to Amsterdam, London and Newport, Rhode Island to raise funds to alleviate the Jewish community in א"י from oppressive taxes imposed by the Ottomans , and was given this letter of introduction:
