Blavatsky's Theosophical movement and a predecessor of many New Age movements. As an introduction to the "I Am" movement check out this article in wikipedia. I'm ignorant of American spiritualism in the 19th century exoticizing and appropriating Jewish mysticism the way it was in Blavatsky's syncretic (and mildly antisemitic fashion) system coming out of Europe. So it's interesting and quite heartening to see a late American, proto-New Age spiritualist attempt to make such a positive contact with an offering of such beautiful creative output -- a nice reflection of the Arts & Craft movement in American book arts, to boot.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12600498.post-40843103192846795872011-07-28T19:30:11.224-04:002011-07-28T19:30:11.224-04:00Anything on Emanuel Sternheim? For example, see כהנת אברהם (1719) by Abraham Hakohen ben Shabbetai of Zante, which features lengthy poems based on all 150 Psalms. It also includes poems based on Perek Shirah, which is usually not mentioned when this book is discussed.

See also Aminadav Dykman's article in the Zulai Memorialschrift.Mar Gavrielnoreply@blogger.com
